On March 26, 1997, the Anita reservoir dam embankment suffered major piping erosion along the outlet pipe. This resulted in the rapid discharge of almost 800 acre-feet of water through and along the outlet pipe in about 36 hours. This resulted in no injury or loss of life, and only minor property damage downstream, however four families evacuated downstream as a precautionary measure. The unusual spring flooding throughout the drainage presented much more serious risk of injury or loss than the failure of Anita Dam--Page .
